A new residue appears

English chemist Smithson Tennant examines the insoluble residue left after dissolving native platinum in aqua regia. Two unknown elements are hiding inside it: iridium and osmium.

Tennant identifies osmium through the pungent smell of its volatile oxide, osmium tetroxide. The name comes from the Greek osme, meaning smell.

French chemist Henri Étienne Sainte-Claire Deville and Jules Henri Debray develop improved methods for isolating platinum-group metals, helping bring osmium into clearer study.
